Oxford Prep-Chino Valley’s choir ensembles traveled to Orange County and competed in Music in the Parks – Disneyland’s festival on Saturday, June 3rd, 2017. After a full day of performances, our school’s Concert Choir, Glee Chorus, Brovation, and Aria ensembles swept their divisions with 1st place finishes.
OPA’s Glee Chorus took their performance of “New York, New York,” “Ubi Caritas,” and “Kuimba” to their greatest heights with a perfect score and Best Overall honors in the festival, topping seven schools and 22 groups from throughout California.
Choir Director and OPA-Chino Valley Music Professor, Mario Raven, shared his enthusiasm for his dedicated and award-winning singers,
“They all are ready to begin rehearsal before I am and take responsibility for making sure that everyone feels welcome and a part of the team. Throughout the year, they have practiced the very difficult music I have given to them and always ask for more.”
Eighth grade Champion Camryn Master shared what she will remember most about the weekend’s competition,
“My favorite memory was our bus ride there because it is when all of us sat near each other and reflected on the competitions we’ve done in the past and talk about how nervous we are to mess up. We ended up doing great in the end!”
In his fourth year as Music Professor here at Oxford Prep-Chino Valley, Mr. Raven teaches Kindergarten through eighth grade with a passion for his subject and the expectation that music education will produce bright and eager students that will perform better in all educational subjects.
“Music Education is instrumental in students learning to work together and forming friendships. Working with numbers and counting allows for better understanding of mathematics. Through music performance students become much better at public speaking and stage deliverance.”
Congratulations to our choirs and Mr. Raven on their successes throughout this academic year!
