A Message for Parents Regarding March 14th

Top letterhead for OPA

Dear Oxford Prep Families,

As you may be aware through various news reports, a National School Walkout will take place on many campuses across the country on Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at 10 a.m., marking the one-month anniversary of the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Although Oxford Preparatory Academy is not actively promoting or announcing this event in our schools, we are planning for possible student participation so that anyone who chooses to engage in a peaceful gathering may do so in a safe and secure indoor location with adult supervision.

Should students wish to participate, they are asked to go to Honour Hall where their positions will be respected and everyone’s safety will be protected. Please note that classes will continue on that day according to the regular schedule. Students will not be penalized for taking part in this peaceful seventeen-minute gathering and students who are not interested in participating will not be pressured to do so. All school rules will apply and no student will be permitted to leave campus without being signed out by a parent or guardian in accordance to our attendance policy.

We encourage families to talk with their child(ren) about any feelings and/or reactions they may have to the recent school tragedy. It is difficult for children and adults alike to comprehend such a senseless act, therefore the following resource for talking with children and youth after traumatic events is shared for your consideration: Talking to Children About Violence: Tips for Parents and Teachers.

The safety and well-being of our Champions is our top priority and a responsibility we take very seriously. We deeply value our strong partnerships with students, families, and the community and will continue to be vigilant in maintaining safe and inclusive learning environments in our schools.

Respectfully,
Oxford Preparatory Academy
