Important CUSD Public Hearing Update

Dear OPA Families and Friends,

Happy July! On Wednesday, July 11th, the Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD) will hold a public hearing to further discuss and hear input on their recent decision to move forward with the OPA-SOC charter revocation process initiated at the June 20th CUSD board meeting.

Thanks in large part to the incredible work done by you to communicate the importance of OPA-SOC to our community, the CUSD board has added an item to the agenda that could lead to a resolution that guarantees our school stays open until June of 2019 and allows us to continue the incredible progress we have made over the last several months. There can be no doubt that your advocacy on behalf of our school has been instrumental in keeping the lines of communication open in order to find a reasonable solution.

If you haven’t seen it already, the CUSD July 11th board meeting agenda includes the discussion of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that, if agreed upon by both OPA and CUSD, would outline expectations for OPA and CUSD in terms of progress toward completely curing the District concerns in the NOV. In addition, a fair and reasonable MOU would allow us to remove the threat of revocation, enter into an open and transparent process that keeps OPA-SOC open for the the school year, and go through the normal charter renewal process.

Of course, tomorrow’s CUSD’s special meeting to hold a public hearing is just the first step in this process. However, we are encouraged by the opportunity to step away from the brinksmanship the revocation process fosters and into a collaborative, open space where we can put the best interest of our students and families first while also fulfilling our promise to be good stewards of public funds.

Therefore, it is as important as ever that you continue to advocate in person and in writing with the CUSD board. Continue to respectfully press for a shared solution that allows this amazing school to continue serving our students. You can refer back to this communication for ways you can share your thoughts with the CUSD board members. We are also only 20 signatures away from our goal of 1000 signatures on our petition to the CUSD board to keep OPA-SOC open so, if you haven’t done so, please add your name and share it with your friends and family. Also, if you can, please plan to attend this Wednesday’s public hearing at CUSD (33122 Valle Rd., San Juan Capistrano) at 6:00 p.m. As you have done so in the past, please continue to represent OPA in a responsible and respectful manner. We want them to be proud to authorize us.

A final reminder, OPA’s board will meet this evening and one of the items we will be discussing is information we plan to share with the CUSD board on Wednesday night. If you can, catch our board in action tonight by viewing the livestream beginning at 5:00 p.m. and see how much progress has been made toward curing the NOV.

Warmly,
Kathi
