OPA-SOC to Avoid Revocation with MOU Solution

Great news! Last night, the Capistrano Unified School District Board voted unanimously to direct the district staff to work with us to develop a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to close out the items left in the NOV they issued to SOC on March 14, 2018. This is an incredible, positive step forward especially considering where we were a few short weeks ago.

Practically speaking, successfully coming to agreement on an MOU that is approved by CUSD at their next board meeting scheduled for July 25th, would provide some needed stability, transparency and predictability, including knowing SOC will be guaranteed to operate through the end of the 18-19 school year while we proceed through the usual renewal process. I will share more about the specifics of the MOU as it is developed. In terms of process, an item will be added to the CUSD agenda for their July 25th meeting to approve the MOU. Should it pass – and we are confident we can come to a mutually agreeable MOU – the previously scheduled revocation vote will not be needed and the item will be dismissed.

From a broader perspective, this is an important step forward in repairing our relationship with CUSD and rebuilding the trust that is important for us to continue our shared goal of serving Orange County families. Parents, staff and students spoke passionately and eloquently last night about their desire for a productive and mutually respectful relationship and the CUSD board members responded in kind.

We will continue with curing the items in the NOV and providing the CUSD identified data, including hiring the new OPA ED and SOC Chancellor and Dean. Regarding the SOC Chancellor position, we have applications from 15 candidates and we will be narrowing the choices over the next several days in order to begin the interview process the week of July 23rd. We also have 12 applicants for the Executive Director position, and the Board will begin their process of selecting the most highly qualified to interview in the next couple of weeks as well.

Again, thank you to so many of you who have engaged with the CUSD board in support of SOC. This progress would not have been possible without your advocacy and I think the CUSD board has responded best to those positive messages of support that included the recognition that, while we have accomplished much, there is still work to be done. Surely, we are on the right path and moving forward.
