Executive Director Weekly Update 11/16/2018

Dear OPA Families:

Next week is a well deserved break for students and staff! I’ve so enjoyed getting to know so many of you and your scholars in these first few months as your new Executive Director. Of course, I would love to spend more time with you and your students but this has also been a time of hard work and commitment to fulfilling promises to our staff and to our authorizers as we continue to make the necessary changes to our central office staffing and operations so that we can be financially healthy for the long term.

Our work fulfilling our obligations under the MOU with CUSD for our SOC campus continues to be a priority for us and having the right team in place to meet those obligations is critical to that effort. As many of you know some of the first steps we took in this process were to replace our back office provider, bringing on ExED to perform Chief Financial Officer functions, hiring Oswaldo Diaz as the organization’s first Chief Business Officer and Shazeen Mufti as Assistant Director of Business Operations.

Efficient, reliable and dependable business operations are critical for our staff and families. We must continue to improve and build our organization for success now and for years to come. As such, we are reorganizing our business operations, engaging expertise in Human Resources and operations, and utilizing ExED to their full potential for our investment.

We are working with ExED to provide their full complement of financial and payroll services. In addition, the OPA Board of Directors has approved a professional services agreement with David Barley, who is no stranger to OPA, to provide the operational management and human resources expertise needed to sustain and grow our organization.

Oswaldo and Shazeen will be leaving us soon to pursue other opportunities as per the restructuring.  Please join me in thanking them for their contributions during their time with us and wishing them success in their new endeavors.

Of course, I also want to express my appreciation to you for continuing to be thoughtful, engaged and supportive through these changes. It is certainly thanks to you and our incredible school-site staffs that we are able to continue delivering on the promise of a high quality education for our students while we make these necessary changes to ensure long-term stability.
