Executive Director Weekly Update 1/18/2018

Dear OPA Families,

This past week OPA received a letter from Capistrano Unified School District confirming that District staff determined that OPA has met all the conditions of the MOU. Staff will recommend Trustees vote to not revoke OPA’s South Orange County charter and authorize the submission of the renewal petition at the February 13, 2019 Special Meeting of the Board. Formal submission of the renewal petition is scheduled for February 27, 2019 during the District’s Regular Meeting of the Board. Your OPA Board of Directors and I are grateful for your support and advocacy and the opportunity to forge a strong partnership with CUSD over these past months.

Next week is National School Choice Week 2019 and coincides with the OPA’s Open House events. Our South Orange County Campus is having a short informational meeting for prospective parents during Open House, on Wednesday, January 23, from 5:00 -7:00 pm. Parents will learn about the school, the Open Enrollment process and watch a short video about OPA. They will be able to tour classrooms and see examples of student work. An additional informational meeting on Friday, January 25, at 2:00 pm for those who were not make it to Open House, however, this meeting will not include classroom tours. Our Saddleback Valley Campus is holding a meeting for prospective families during their Open House on Thursday, January 24, starting at 5:00 pm. Families will have the opportunity to tour the campus. If you know a family that may be interested in joining our OPA community, please invite them to these events.

I am pleased to announce OPA is implementing a new online lottery and application system this year. This new system will greatly streamline our processes, and therefore, we are able to push the enrollment dates into late February. More information on the exact dates for Open Enrollment and the lottery will be coming soon, so please check our website for updates later this month. Once the Open Enrollment period starts, a link will be available on the website to fill out your applications and be entered into the lottery.

Watch the Full Moon turn red! Don’t miss your chance to see a Blood Moon on Sunday, January 20. This total lunar eclipse will be visible in the US, Canada, South America, parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa.
